FAQs

What is CAT8?
The latest high-performance twisted-pair standard is CAT8 (Category-8), designed to deliver very high bandwidth - it is rated to 40 Gbps and 2000 MHz (2 GHz) - and is optimized to make short and very high-speed connections, such as those in a data center.
How fast is CAT8 and how far can it run at those speeds?
The maximum speed supported by CAT8 is 40 Gbps, but this applies only to short runs; the standard channel length for 25/40 mixed mastery is approximately 30 m (100 ft), while the permanent link length is defined as 24 m in some test specifications. At lower speeds (110 Gbps), Cat-8 may be run at higher distances, with other cable varieties (Cat6A) typically being run at 100 m (330 ft).
Will CAT8 work with my existing router, switches or RJ45 ports?
Yes, CAT8 patch cables are most commonly installed with RJ45 connectors and can be used on older Ethernet ports (Cat6/Cat6A, etc.). With that said, in order to achieve 25/40 Gbps, you require network equipment (switches, NICs) that is capable of those speeds - the cable will not instantly upgrade a router operating at 1 Gbps into one operating at 40 Gbps.
Is CAT8 worth buying for home use, gaming or streaming?
In the majority of homes: no, the limits in most consumer internet and in-home routers are 1-2.5 Gbps, and most off-the-shelf home networks do not require 40 Gbps. None of CAT8 is optimal in data centers, server racks, or special high-throughput lab setups. It can make sense when you need future-proofing within the same rack or even between equipment where ultra-low latency or multi-10Gb connections are important, but otherwise Cat6A or Cat7 can provide a far better price-utility ratio.
Is CAT8 shielded — do I need special installation or grounding?
The majority of actual CAT8 cables are shielded (to achieve those high frequencies), and certain line styles can't be correctly grounded or requested to lead to noisy operation without proper terminus. Cracky removals The shield of the shielded cable can cancel all the advantages provided; therefore, with structured cabling or permanent installations, it turns out to be prudent to utilize certified cables, shielded connector assemblies, and observed grounding conventions.
Can CAT8 carry Power over Ethernet (PoE)?
Yes, CAT8 Ethernet Cable has the potential of carrying PoE; however, in practice, making PoE relies on cable gauge and PoE class. Most CAT8 products, especially those with larger conductors, can support high-power PoE classes; however, it is essential to check the manufacturer's specifications for wattage support, as the choice of cable and connector quality affects heat and power dissipation.
